In a move set to redefine long-haul economy travel, Air New Zealand has announced the launch of Economy Skynest, introducing the world’s first lie-flat sleep pods designed specifically for Economy and Premium Economy passengers.
Positioned as a response to growing demand for comfort on ultra long-haul routes, the Skynest concept features six individual sleeping pods, offering passengers the opportunity to leave their seats and rest in a private, dedicated space mid-flight. Each pod can be booked for a four-hour session, allowing travellers to recharge during extended journeys.

On specifications, the airline revealed that each pod measures approximately 203 cm (6.6 feet) in length, with a shoulder width of around 64 cm, tapering to 41 cm at the feet, designed to optimise comfort within the aircraft’s spatial constraints.
The Skynest will be installed between the Economy and Premium Economy cabins on Air New Zealand’s Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner (V5 configuration), marking a significant cabin innovation for the carrier.
