The decision, announced on Sunday, came after widespread protests erupted following the death of 32-year-old youth leader Sharif Osman Hadi, who was critically injured in Dhaka on December 12 and later died in Singapore.
Thousands took to the streets demanding accountability, and violent demonstrations have been reported in Dhaka and other parts of the country. Amid the unrest, a Hindu garment worker was lynched in Mymensingh district and several major newspaper offices were set on fire.
