UP Tourism announces development of Sharda Barrage and Chandan Chowki in Lakhimpur Kheri

The initiative includes development of accommodation, wellness centre, and eco-tourism infrastructure under 15-year operational plan.

The Department of Tourism, Government of Uttar Pradesh will transform the Chandan Chowki and Sharda Barrage in Lakhimpur Kheri into premier tourism destinations. The initiative includes the development of commercial accommodation, a wellness centre, and related eco-tourism infrastructure under a 15-year operational plan. The project aims to position the region as a unique hub for holistic wellness and wildlife tourism.

To drive this vision forward, the Uttar Pradesh Eco Tourism Development Board (UPETDB), on behalf of the Department of Tourism, invites proposals from qualified applicants for executing and managing the project. The selected agency will be responsible for the planning, design, development, financing, and year-round operation of the facilities. The accommodation, equivalent to a minimum 3-star category hotel, must operate for at least 180 days per year and can remain open for up to 365 days based on viability.

The project will be developed on a PPP model, with the government offering land based on the availability. The objective is to showcase Sharda Barrage as a fresh tourism destination, providing a complete package that combines wellness and wildlife, appealing to both domestic and international tourists seeking meaningful travel experiences.

Speaking about the initiative, Uttar Pradesh Tourism Minister Jaiveer Singh said, “We are committed to unlocking the tourism potential of Lakhimpur Kheri and presenting Sharda Barrage as a serene, sustainable, and holistic getaway. This project is a step towards boosting eco-tourism, creating jobs, and putting Uttar Pradesh on the global wellness tourism map.”

The development emphasises the state’s strategic push to increase tourist traffic and community participation, turning local pride into a national and global attraction.
