Positioned as a dedicated hub for astronomy-based experiences, the observatory will host stargazing sessions, astronomy workshops, and educational programmes aimed at students, tourists, and local communities.
Leading a new era of astro-tourism in India, an astronomical observatory has been inaugurated in Pithoragarh, Uttarakhand, marking a notable milestone in the state’s efforts to promote science-led and experiential tourism.
As per reports online, the facility has been set up by the District Tourism Department, Pithoragarh, in partnership with astro-tourism company Starscapes, as part of a broader initiative to diversify tourism offerings in the hill district. The observatory was formally inaugurated by Satpal Maharaj, Minister for Tourism, Uttarakhand.
Senior district officials were present at the inauguration, including Ashish Kumar Bhatgain, District Magistrate, Pithoragarh; Kalpana Devlal, Mayor, Pithoragarh; and Kirti Chandra Arya, District Tourism Development Officer, Pithoragarh.
Positioned as a dedicated hub for astronomy-based experiences, the observatory will host stargazing sessions, astronomy workshops, and educational programmes aimed at students, tourists, and local communities. Leveraging Pithoragarh’s naturally dark skies and high-altitude terrain, the facility is expected to strengthen the district’s appeal among astro-tourists while supporting year-round tourism activity.
"The ideas and discussions around building observatories and promoting astro-tourism within the department have been underway for a long time, and it is extremely heartening to see this vision take tangible shape. The observatory established in Pithoragarh will not only encourage scientific activities but will also create new avenues for tourism and employment for local communities. In the coming years, the government will work towards setting up observatories at other suitable locations across the state and strengthening the foundational infrastructure required for astro-tourism," Satpal Maharaj, Tourism Minister, said.
A key feature of the project is its community-driven approach. Starscapes has introduced a structured Astro Guide training programme for local residents, enabling them to manage observatory operations and deliver professional stargazing experiences. This model aims to integrate tourism development with skill-building and employment generation at the local level.
With sustainability at its core, the observatory combines modern astronomical infrastructure with responsible tourism practices. Educational outreach remains a central focus, with curated programmes planned for schools and visiting groups.
"Pithoragarh’s natural dark skies offer immense potential for astro-tourism. Through this observatory and the training of local Astro Guides, the district administration aims to position Pithoragarh as a responsible and sustainable tourism destination while ensuring that local communities directly benefit from this initiative," Kirti Chandra Arya, District Tourism Development Officer, said.
The Astro Guide Training Programme focuses on practical astronomy, telescope operations, and visitor engagement, with the objective of delivering immersive experiences for tourists.
"Astro-tourism becomes truly impactful when world-class infrastructure is supported by well-trained local guides. By training Astro Guides for the Pithoragarh observatory, we are ensuring that scientific facilities are accessible, engaging, and professionally managed. This model not only enhances visitor experience but also creates long-term livelihood opportunities rooted in local talent," Hem Sharma of Starscapes said.
