CzechTourism and the Consulate General of the Czech Republic have announced the reopening of the Czech Consulate office in Mumbai, marking the return of consular operations to the city after nearly 15 years. The move is aimed at strengthening engagement with the Indian market across tourism, trade and people-to-people exchanges.
To mark the reopening, a press conference and networking evening was held in Mumbai on December 9, 2025. The event brought together representatives from the Consulate, CzechTourism, Prague Airport as well as Mumbai travel trade, presenting a unified approach: to strengthen trade ties, and promote Czechia across tourism, education, business, films, celebrations and the MICE segment in India.
Barbara Andelova, International Marketing Manager - New Markets at CzechTourism, highlighted Czechia’s positioning as a safe destination for Indian travellers and said the country is keen to grow its share of MICE and incentive groups, alongside FITs, solo travellers, young families, and the youth segment, regardless whether from the luxury segment or not. “We are a country of free spirit, one can be free to experience, to taste, to try, to be active, also to be lazy, if you wish to,” shared Andelova.
She added that Czechia is focusing not only on increasing arrivals from India but also on extending the average length of stay. According to Andelova, the number of Indian travellers visiting the country is slowly growing. Indian travellers are also gradually exploring destinations beyond Prague, including wine regions, spa towns and heritage cities such as Brno.
She also pointed out that 2025 marked the first time the MICHELIN Guide evaluated restaurants across Czechia. As part of this, four Czech restaurants were awarded the MICHELIN Green Star, recognising their commitment to sustainability, use of local ingredients and responsible operations.
Katerina Vovkova, Consul General of the Czech Republic, said the decision to re-establish the Consulate General in Mumbai was driven by the city’s role as India’s financial, business and trade hub. She stated that Czechia aims to enhance cooperation with India across tourism, education, culture and trade, while also strengthening people-to-people ties and attracting more Indian students.
She added that promotion would be a key starting point in this effort, with the Consulate working closely with CzechTourism to build awareness and deepen engagement with the Indian market.
Veronika Senjukova, Consul and Deputy Head of Mission, along with Maros Martin Guoth, Vice Consul for Economic Affairs, were also present to support the tourism board.
GB Srithar, Head -Tourism Services, VFS Global, also noted, “The opening of the Czech Consulate office in Mumbai comes at a time when outbound travel from India is expanding rapidly, particularly from the western and southern regions. This development will not only strengthen visa access but also enhance Czechia’s accessibility. We are happy to collaborate with Czech Tourism to promote its diverse and rich offerings across heritage, culture and immersive experiences. The destination welcomes several thousand Indian tourists annually and is set to increase their visibility across various traveller segments.”
With the reopening of the Mumbai Consulate, Czechia is aiming to position itself to tap into India’s growing outbound travel market and laying the foundation for stronger long-term collaboration across multiple sectors. CzechTourism also has plans to conduct online training programmes for its business partners, alongside virtual workshops highlighting different regions of Czechia.
