Saudi showcases heritage sites to woo Indian travellers

Have you ever been intrigued by time travel? Imagine going back to old times and witness monuments with intricate architecture, forts, ancient buildings, and stories that went on to become examples of grit. There may not be a time machine to take us into the past just yet, but there are relics and edifices that stand to date in Saudi, where every rock and artefact tell an intriguing story. A real treat for every Indian history enthusiast with a passion for exploration!
AlUla
Begin your adventure in AlUla, home to Hegra, Saudi’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is a spectacular canvas painted with nature’s imagination and a splash of artistry. The ancient Nabateans sculpted the rock-cut tombs that dot the vast landscapes today amid massive rock structures that have taken various shapes like an elephant, even a human face by centuries of natural effects.
At-Turaif, Diriyah
Next up is Diriyah. Also considered as the soul of Saudi heritage, it is a fairly short drive from Riyadh. Once the capital city of the first Saudi state, the well-preserved At-Turaif, another heritage site, speak volumes of a bygone era replete with brave warriors and royal courts. Today, this mud and brick structures accompanied by winding alleys are examples of Saudi roots, a time where it all began. For Indian travellers, Diriyah holds a deeper significance as it was a part of the ancient trade route, where our cultures and food preferences mixed. The evening light and sound show must not be missed. It’s a good idea to engage a local guide who would offer a deeper understanding of the site.
When in Saudi
Beyond the heritage sites, Saudi is dotted with fascinating attractions. Saudi Red Sea coast is ideal for diving and snorkeling to discover coral reefs. The coastal cities of Jeddah and Al-Wajh offer a blend of relaxation and vacation options for multi-generational families like picnics, food festivals, evening strolls on the corniche, and great food.
The Asir region in southwestern Saudi is known for cool climate, mountain range, rose farms and picturesque villages. Explore hiking trails, ancient forts, and souqs for immersive cultural and adventure experiences.
