WTC expected to propel Melaka’s tourism industry

Speaking about the progress of heritage city Melaka at the recently concluded World Tourism Conference (WTC) 2013, Datuk Seri ir. Hj Idris Bin HJ Haron, Chief Minister, Melaka Haron stated that the destination needs to increase offerings to travellers and investors to keep up with global tourism growth. WTC, he believes, provides a great platform to meet this end.

“The selection of this venue will doubtlessly strengthen our determination to leverage tourism as the economic well being and advancement of the tourism industry. Our vision is to create a profitable and sustainable tourism industry, and we are incorporating green technology into tourism for the same. We aim to be a green state by 2020.

“Tourism has become a global phenomenon, of greater importance than ever as so many people have travelled to so many places and been exposed to various cultures, religions and lifestyles. Travel has always been about aspiration and ambition, curiosity, self improvement, and discovering something new,” he said at the inauguration.

YB Dato’ Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz, Minister of Tourism and Culture, Malaysia lauded the Conference for the opportunity to showcase the Heritage City Melaka. To this end, Tourism Malaysia organised Walking Heritage Tours of Melaka, as well as Homestay Tours post the Conference for the attendees to experience the destination firsthand.
